What is a Metering Concept?

As a metering operator, we offer you turnkey metering concepts that provide a detailed and structured understanding and ensure correct billing and balancing of energy flows. It allows a clear overview of existing and future systems such as generation plants, energy storage, charging stations or heat pumps by organising them into the required metering points.

This includes, among others, the recording of:

  • Type and quantity of generation plants / flexibilities / storage
  • Number of consumers requiring individual metering
  • Required number of measurements and data connection – including local control and energy management systems

The metering concept covers not only data collection, but also details such as planned electricity usage (e.g. commercial tenant electricity, self-consumption, full feed-in), billing methods for electricity quantities (balancing rules) and commercial considerations of operators.

When is a Metering Concept Required?

Before connecting photovoltaic and other renewable energy systems to the power grid, the operator must obtain approval for the metering concept. This is mandatory for all operator models but is particularly important for tenant electricity projects and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

Full Feed-in

For systems with an installed capacity of at least 20 kW(p), the billing of the system's electricity consumption is carried out according to EEG/KWKG as full feed-in. acteno consistently uses all meters as bidirectional energy meters.

Full Feed-in With or Without Consumption at the Common Grid Connection

Surplus Feed-in

This typically applies to new systems with a capacity exceeding 30 kW(p). The calculation of energy quantities is as follows:

  • The consumption corresponds to the reference value Z1.
  • The feed-in quantity equals the feed-in Z1.
  • Self-consumption results from the difference between feed-in Z2 and feed-in Z1.
Surplus Feed-in with Generation Metering

This metering concept can also be combined with storage, charging stations or other generation systems. A complex metering concept must ensure proper balancing of energy flows.

  • Consumption consists of the reference value Z1 plus the difference between feed-in Z2 and feed-in Z1.
  • The feed-in corresponds to feed-in Z2.
Commercial-Accounting Transfer

Defined in § 11 paragraph 2 EEG: This metering concept applies as an exception when the use of metering concept 1 proves demonstrably impracticable. Z1 and Z2 must be consistently implemented as RLM meters.
